How We Check
We check it out
so you don’t have to.
How we research, how affiliate links work, who pays, and why it never costs you extra.
In plain English
Our promise to you
- Our Pick has to be earned. A green check only means we have reviewed a company. The blue Our Pick badge goes only to companies we would happily recommend even if they paid us nothing.
- Others still get a fair shake. Companies that aren’t Our Picks can still show up in our comparisons, with fair, factual notes about where they fall short.
- Bad deals stay out. If we think something is a bad deal or not trustworthy, we leave it out rather than link to it.
- Money can't buy a better score. A company that pays us a referral fee can never buy a better score or a better spot on the page.
- Honest opinions, honestly labeled. Our reviews are our honest opinions. We tell you what we actually checked, and we don't make claims we can't back up.
- How we get paid. We earn money when you buy through some of our links, and it never costs you more. Read our full disclosure.
How we check a product or service
- We read the fine print. Pricing pages, terms, cancellation rules, and fees, straight from the company's own website.
- We try it where we can. We test sign-up and booking steps ourselves, and we say clearly when we have not used something.
- We compare the alternatives. Every pick is weighed against at least one other option, so you can see why it won.
- We tell you how we get paid. Every affiliate link is disclosed, and a commission never buys a better rating.
What our marks mean: Reviewed and Our Pick
Reviewed by us Our Pick
A green check means we have reviewed the company. You will see it next to the names of companies with a full Vetteroo review, wherever a company is named as a heading, card, table label or list item. It tells you there is a full review to read. It is not a recommendation on its own. Companies we have not reviewed yet have no mark.
The blue Our Pick badge has to be earned. It is the green check inside a blue badge, and it marks the companies we would happily recommend. In each topic, we look at every company we have reviewed in full and check it on four things:
- Value: what you get for the price compared with others in the same topic, including free plans or trials and how the cost grows with you.
- Honest pricing and terms: clearly published prices, no surprise jump at renewal, easy online cancellation, and a fair refund policy.
- Reputation and support: a solid track record, what real customers say, whether you can reach a real person, and how it protects your security and privacy.
- Fit: how well it suits the people the topic is for, how easy it is to use, and what it does especially well.
A company has to do well on all four, not just one. If our review flags a real negative, such as a pattern of customer complaints, a billing or cancellation trap, unclear pricing, or a big price jump at renewal, it can’t be an Our Pick, however good the rest looks.
Payment or partnership never affects it. Whether a company pays us a referral fee plays no part. At most two companies in a topic are Our Picks, and some topics have one or none. We re-check our picks whenever we re-check prices, and a company that no longer meets the bar stops being an Our Pick.
For readers
- You read a review, guide, or comparison to help you decide.
- If you choose to buy, you can click one of our links. Some of them are affiliate links.
- The company you buy from may pay us a small commission. Your price stays the same.
- That commission pays for the research, so the guides stay free.
For businesses
Have a product you think our readers would like? Tell us about it and your affiliate program on our For Businesses page. Sending it to us never buys a review or a better score.
Our ground rules
- Every affiliate link is disclosed, as the Federal Trade Commission requires.
- Money never decides a ranking. If a product is not a good fit, we say so.
- Real estate referrals go only through Superior Realty's licensed principal broker. We never pay unlicensed people for real estate referrals.
- No fake reviews, invented testimonials, or made-up numbers.
An example, with made-up numbers
Example only, not real data. A reader finds our guide to Colombia day tours, clicks a tour link, and books a $100 tour. If that tour program paid an 8% commission (example), Vetteroo would earn $8. The reader pays the same $100 either way.
Disclosure: Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend things we believe are useful. Read our full disclosure.
