Who should skip it
How it works day to day
This part draws on 1Password’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used 1Password ourselves.
Once set up, 1Password autofills logins in your browser and apps, offers to save new ones, and suggests strong passwords when you sign up somewhere. You organize items in vaults and can share a vault with family members or coworkers. Watchtower keeps a running list of weak or reused passwords.
Key features in use
- Password generator that suggests strong credentials.
- Vaults you can create, name and share.
- Expiring share links for single items.
- Passkey support for passwordless sign-in.
- Watchtower security alerts; for businesses, an admin dashboard and SSO unlock.
Setup and learning curve
Install the app and browser extension, create your account (1Password uses a Secret Key alongside your account password), then import passwords from your browser or another manager. Family members get their own accounts under the Families plan.
Integrations
Apps run on Mac, iOS, Windows, Android and Linux, with browser extensions. For businesses, 1Password connects to SSO providers and existing security tools.
Support
1Password offers help guides and support; business customers get admin tools for provisioning and deprovisioning.
Real-world use cases
- A family shares a vault for streaming and utility logins while keeping private vaults.
- Someone sends a contractor a Wi-Fi password through an expiring link.
- A small business uses SSO unlock so staff sign in with their work login.
