We researched Cloudways' pricing, billing rules and help center articles, plus customer reviews and independent hosting reviews. We haven't hosted a site on it ourselves, so this is research-based, not a speed test.

Who it’s best for

  • People whose WordPress or WooCommerce site has outgrown cheap shared hosting.
  • Freelancers and small agencies who look after several sites. One server can hold many sites.

Who should skip it

  • Not ideal for a first-time site owner. It's more technical than beginner hosting, and email and domains aren't included.

What it costs

Prices checked October 23, 2026, from Cloudways’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.

  • Flexible plans (on DigitalOcean) start at $11 a month for 2GB memory, 1 CPU, 50GB storage and 2TB bandwidth. That's about $0.036 an hour.
  • Bigger servers cost more, for example $88 a month for a mid-size DigitalOcean server. Other clouds (Vultr, Linode, AWS, Google Cloud) are priced differently.
  • Autonomous plans, which scale on their own, start at $99 a month.
  • Add-ons cost extra: Cloudflare Enterprise from $4.99 per domain a month, malware protection $4 per app a month, offsite backups about 3 cents per GB, Advanced Support $100 a month.
  • Free 3-day trial with no credit card. The first site migration is free.

What we like

  • Customers rate support highly: 4.6 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 3,778 reviews, with most praise going to patient, knowledgeable support staff.
  • No long contract. You pay for the hours you use and can change server size.
  • A choice of five cloud providers and many locations.
  • Owned by DigitalOcean, a large cloud company.

What to watch for

  • No email hosting or domain sales, so you'll need other providers for those.
  • A learning curve if you've only used simple hosting control panels.
  • You pay a markup over buying the same server straight from the cloud provider. Independent reviews put it at roughly 2 to 2.5 times.
  • Some long-time customers report that support has slipped since DigitalOcean bought Cloudways in 2022, and some report confusing bills.

The fine print

  • Billing is after the fact: you get a monthly invoice for the hours you used.
  • Stopping a server doesn't stop billing. You have to delete servers and remove paid add-ons, per Cloudways' help center.
  • There's no money-back guarantee. Cloudways runs under DigitalOcean's terms, which only refund unused prepaid credit if you ask within 3 months. The free trial is how you try before paying.

The main alternative: Kinsta

It's a well-known managed WordPress host. It offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What it costs: $35/mo or $30/mo billed yearly, first month $0, checked October 24, 2026

Also worth knowing: For a first website, a budget host like Hostinger (official site) is simpler and includes email. Watch the renewal price, which is usually higher than the intro price.

Pick Cloudways if you…

  • want the lower bill. Cloudways starts at $11 a month; Kinsta starts at $30 to $35 a month.
  • run several sites. One Cloudways server can hold many sites, while Kinsta prices by the site.
  • want to pick your cloud provider and server size, and pay by the hour with no yearly commitment.

Pick Kinsta if you…

  • run one WordPress site and want one simple price with CDN and backups already included.
  • want a money-back guarantee. Kinsta offers 30 days; Cloudways doesn't offer one.
  • don't want to think about servers at all and are happy to pay more for that.

Our take

Cloudways is a solid step up when a site needs more speed and room than shared hosting gives, and you don't want to manage a server yourself. It costs a lot less than Kinsta, especially if you run more than one site. Add up the add-ons before you choose a size. If you run a single WordPress site and want everything in one price plus a refund window, Kinsta costs more but is simpler. If this is your first website, a budget host is probably the easier start.
