Who it’s best for
- People who want light, quiet protection without many extras.
- Households with a mix of Windows, Mac and Android devices.
Who should skip it
- Probably not the best fit if you want strong parental controls.
How it works day to day
This part draws on ESET’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used ESET ourselves.
ESET runs quietly in the background and is known for a light touch on system resources. Day to day you'll mostly notice it when you open a bank or crypto site in its secured browser mode, or when it flags a risky page or download. Your subscription and devices live in an ESET HOME account, where you add devices and see their status.
Key features in use
- Safe Banking and browsing protection: a secured browser mode for banking and payments, plus anti-phishing.
- Firewall, Wi-Fi protection and Network Inspector, which checks your home router and connected devices for weaknesses.
- LiveGuard, which analyzes suspicious files in the cloud before they can run.
- Webcam and microphone access monitoring.
- On Premium: Secure Data file encryption, Folder Guard to protect chosen folders, and a VPN.
Setup and learning curve
Create or sign in to an ESET HOME account, add your subscription, then choose Protect device to download the installer for Windows, Mac or Android. ESET advises removing other antivirus software first. ESET's knowledge base has a guide to switching on the extra security tools after installation.
Integrations
Like other antivirus suites, ESET doesn't plug into business apps. One ESET HOME account covers all the devices on your plan.
Support
ESET runs a knowledge base with step-by-step setup articles, plus customer care for home users.
Real-world use cases
- Someone with an older or slower PC who wants protection that stays out of the way.
- A household that banks and shops online and wants a hardened browser for payments.
- A home office that wants to check its Wi-Fi router and connected devices for weak spots.
What it costs
Prices checked October 25, 2026, from ESET’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.
- Home Security Essential: $49.99 a year for 1 device, plus $5 a year for each extra device up to 10 (3 devices $59.99, 5 devices $69.99), per PCMag's review updated January 14, 2026.
- ESET often runs first-year sales; its renewal terms say auto-renewal uses standard pricing.
- Premium adds a password manager and encryption; Ultimate adds a VPN and privacy features.
What we like
- PCMag rated it 4.0 out of 5 ("Excellent") in its review updated January 14, 2026, noting perfect scores from four testing labs.
- Scored 6/6/6 at AV-TEST in August 2026, according to an independent summary.
- Full-featured Android protection, a home network scanner and anti-theft.
- Five devices cost less than many rivals at standard price.
What to watch for
- Limited parental controls.
- A poor score in PCMag's own hands-on malware test.
- The interface is more technical than Norton's.
The fine print
- Auto-renewal charges standard pricing. ESET says it emails you 30 days before a yearly renewal.
- You can turn auto-renewal off in the ESET eStore.
The main alternative: Bitdefender
It earned 6/6/6 in AV-TEST's August 2026 Windows round. Its bundled VPN is capped at 200 MB a day per device below the Premium plan.

Also worth knowing: Microsoft Defender is free and built into Windows, and is enough for many people.
Pick ESET if you…
- want a light, low-fuss suite at a fair standard price.
- care more about steady renewal pricing than a big first-year discount.
Pick Bitdefender if you…
- want the best-known lab record and a bigger first-year discount.
- want more extras, like a password manager, in the mid-tier plan.
Our take
ESET is a solid, no-nonsense choice with strong lab results and fair pricing for several devices. It's lighter on family features than rivals. If you want the deepest first-year discount, compare Bitdefender, but check its renewal price too.
