Who it’s best for
- Marketers, creators and trainers who want a realistic talking avatar without filming.
- People who want to translate a video into other languages with lip-sync.
Who should skip it
- Probably not the best fit if you need predictable costs for heavy use, because everything paid runs on credits.
How it works day to day
This part draws on HeyGen’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used HeyGen ourselves.
You work in HeyGen's AI Studio in the browser. You start a new video (landscape or portrait) from scratch, from a template, from a photo, or by uploading a PowerPoint or PDF, then type or paste a script, pick an avatar and voice, and arrange scenes. HeyGen describes the redesigned studio as built for people who have never edited a video, with no traditional timeline to learn. When you're happy, you generate the video and download or share it.
Key features in use
- Script-driven editing: change the words and the avatar's speech changes with them, so fixing a line doesn't mean re-filming.
- Slide and document import: upload a PPT or PDF and build scenes from it, which suits explainer and training videos.
- Templates with variables: write a script with fill-in fields such as the contact's first name and company, then generate a personalized copy for each contact.
- Video translation into other languages with lip-sync (paid plans, as noted above).
Setup and learning curve
Making a first video is simple: HeyGen's own guide walks you from Create to a finished video in a few steps. Personalized-video campaigns take longer. HeyGen's help center calls it a multi-step process: build a template with variables, then connect a spreadsheet or CRM so new contacts trigger new videos. HeyGen's Zapier guide notes that a test mode lets you preview a templated video with a watermark without spending credits.
Integrations
HeyGen connects to Zapier (for example, a new row in Google Sheets can create a video from a template), has a HubSpot app that installs a ready-made workflow for generating a video per contact, and offers a HeyGen AI Avatars app inside Canva that puts an avatar presenter on a Canva design and exports an MP4. There's also an API for developers.
Support
HeyGen runs a searchable help center with step-by-step articles and video walkthroughs for the studio, templates and each integration.
Real-world use cases
- A marketer turns a product one-pager into a short presenter-led video for social media.
- A sales team sends each new lead a short video that greets them by name, generated from a template through HubSpot or Zapier.
- A creator records once in English and publishes translated versions for other markets.
What it costs
Prices checked October 25, 2026, from HeyGen’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.
- Free: 3 watermarked videos a month, up to 1 minute each.
- Creator: $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly. 600 credits, 1080p export, videos up to 30 minutes.
- Pro: from $49 a month for 1,000 credits and 4K export. Higher Pro tiers go up to 100,000 credits for $4,300 a month.
- Business: $149 a month plus $20 per seat.
What we like
- A real free plan to test the avatars before paying.
- 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans, with video translation.
- Credits roll over for one month on monthly plans, and until renewal on yearly plans.
- Trustpilot showed 4.2 out of 5 from about 4,800 reviews as of October 25, 2026, with frequent praise for ease of use.
What to watch for
- Credits can go fast, and how many credits a video uses depends on the model and length.
- A bad render can cost credits again to fix, according to recent reviews.
- Creator can't buy one-time credit packs; you have to upgrade.
- About 14% of those Trustpilot reviews gave one star, mostly about credits, rendering and support.
The fine print
- Unused credits are lost when you cancel.
- Free-plan videos carry a watermark.
- Custom avatar slots vary by region and account creation date.
The main alternative: Synthesia
Synthesia is the best-known avatar video tool for company training and how-to videos in many languages. It has a free plan. Minutes per month are capped, and some reviewers find its avatars stiffer than a real presenter.
What it costs: Free plan; Starter $14/mo billed yearly, checked October 26, 2026

Pick HeyGen if you…
- want the most realistic avatars and video translation for marketing or social content.
- are fine with credit-based pricing and will watch your usage.
Pick Synthesia if you…
- mainly make internal training videos and want a cheaper first paid plan.
- prefer a set number of minutes per month to credits.
Our take
HeyGen is a strong pick for realistic avatars and translated videos, and the free plan makes it easy to try. The catch is credits: heavy users should watch how fast they burn. If you mostly make training videos, Synthesia's cheaper starter plan is worth comparing.
