Who it’s best for
- Photographers, planners, designers and other creative service businesses in the US and Canada.
- People who want polished proposals, contracts and invoices that clients can pay online.
Who should skip it
- Not available to businesses outside the US and Canada.
How it works day to day
This part draws on HoneyBook’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used HoneyBook ourselves.
HoneyBook runs each booking as a project. A new inquiry comes in from your contact form, and you reply with a Smart File: one branded, interactive document where the client can choose services, sign the contract, answer questions, book a call and pay, all in one flow. After that, the project has its own messages, files, tasks and payment schedule, and the client can see their part in a client portal.
Key features in use
- Smart Files that combine a proposal, contract, invoice, questionnaire and scheduling in one client-facing document.
- A client portal where clients see shared files, messages, invoices and meetings, while your internal notes stay private.
- Automations built from triggers, actions, delays and conditions, such as sending a welcome questionnaire after payment (Essentials and up).
- A scheduler for booking calls (Essentials and up).
- Online payments by card or bank transfer, with payment schedules.
Setup and learning curve
Most of the setup is building your Smart File templates and, on Essentials and up, your automations. Some reviewers find that setup time-consuming (noted above), but once templates exist, sending a new client their documents takes minutes.
Integrations
HoneyBook connects with QuickBooks Online (Essentials and up), Google Calendar, Calendly (meetings sync into HoneyBook one way), Zapier and other tools listed on its integrations page.
Support
HoneyBook has an in-depth help center and offers live chat with product specialists inside the app; Premium adds priority support.
Real-world use cases
- A wedding photographer sends one Smart File where the couple picks a package, signs and pays a deposit.
- An event planner automates follow-ups, questionnaires and payment reminders for each booking.
- A designer keeps every client's messages, files and invoices in one project.

The main alternative: Dubsado
Dubsado is a client-management app for service businesses that want detailed forms and automated workflows. A 21-day free trial includes Premier features and doesn't charge you automatically.
What it costs: $35/mo or $335/yr, checked October 25, 2026
Pick HoneyBook if you…
- want a polished, easy client experience and a long refund window.
- are fine paying more for automations on Essentials.
Pick Dubsado if you…
- want deeply customizable forms and workflows.
- want a 21-day trial that never charges you automatically.
Our take
HoneyBook is an easy, well-liked choice for US and Canadian creative businesses, with a generous 60-day refund window. Plan on Essentials if you want automations. Dubsado suits people who want more control over forms and workflows.
