We researched Keeper's official pricing and terms, plus independent reviews and customer feedback. We haven't used Keeper ourselves, so this is a research-based review, not a hands-on test.
Who it’s best for
- Freelancers and 1099 workers who want help finding write-offs all year.
- People who want a tax professional to review and sign their return.
Who should skip it
- Not for people with a simple return who just want the cheapest filing.
How it works day to day
This part draws on Keeper Tax’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Keeper Tax ourselves.
Keeper works all year, not just at tax time. You link your bank accounts and cards, and Keeper scans the transactions, sorts business expenses and flags possible write-offs. You review them, fix anything it got wrong, and add expenses it missed. At filing time, it prepares your federal and up to two state returns, a tax pro reviews it, and you approve the final refund or amount owed before it goes to the IRS.
Key features in use
- Automatic expense categorization and write-off detection from linked accounts.
- Manual adding or importing of expenses.
- Federal and up to two state returns, reviewed by a tax pro before filing.
- On Premium: quarterly tax support, plus a 30-minute tax-pro call every three months.
Setup and learning curve
Linking accounts takes a few minutes. The ongoing work is reviewing flagged expenses now and then, which is what makes the year-end return quicker.
Integrations
Keeper connects to your bank and card accounts to find expenses; it isn't designed to connect to other business apps.
Support
Keeper's help center covers how the app works and filing. Support includes AI help and access to tax professionals, with scheduled tax-pro calls on Premium.
Real-world use cases
- A rideshare or delivery driver wants work expenses such as phone and car costs found automatically through the year.
- A freelance designer wants every possible write-off found without keeping a spreadsheet.
- A 1099 worker who wants a professional to review the return.
What it costs
Prices checked October 25, 2026, from Keeper Tax’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.
- Standard: $199 a year. Year-round expense tracking, write-off detection, a federal return and up to 2 state returns, reviewed and signed by a tax pro.
- Premium: $399 a year. Adds quarterly tax support, amendments, prior-year returns and help with complex returns.
What we like
- Combines bookkeeping-style write-off tracking with filing.
- A tax pro reviews and signs the return.
What to watch for
- Far more expensive than FreeTaxUSA for a simple return.
- Complaints mention surprise charges after the trial, confusing billing and errors on complex returns.
- We couldn't confirm a current Trustpilot rating.
The fine print
- The 14-day free trial can't file with the IRS; filing needs a paid yearly plan.
- Cancel before the trial ends if you don't want to be charged.
The main alternative: FreeTaxUSA
It gives less hand-holding than TurboTax.
What it costs: $0 federal; $15.99 per state (2026 season, 2025 returns), checked October 25, 2026
