Who it’s best for
- People who want a well-known exchange with many coins.
- Active traders who will use the lower Kraken Pro fees.
- Holders who want staking and other features in one account.
Who should skip it
- Probably not the best fit if you only want to make a quick one-off card purchase into your own wallet, where Paybis is simpler.
How it works day to day
This part draws on Kraken’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 29, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Kraken ourselves.
Day to day, you buy or sell in the Kraken app, or switch to Kraken Pro for order books, charts and lower fees.

- Staking where available.
- Volume- or holdings-based fee tiers.

Help center and 24/7 support, per Kraken.
Real-world use cases

- An active trader lowers fees by moving up tiers.
- A holder stakes coins where it is offered.
What it costs
Prices checked October 29, 2026, from Kraken’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.
- Kraken Pro: fees fall with volume or assets held. Tier 1 (under $2,500 a month) is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker; Tier 2 ($2,500+) is 0.30% and 0.60% (fee tiers updated July 9, 2026).
- Instant Buy in the main Kraken app: a 1% fee, plus a spread and any payment method fee.
- Buying with a card or other payment methods can add fees; Kraken shows them before you confirm.
- Withdrawal fees vary by asset.
What we like
- Long-running exchange (since 2011).
- Lower fees on Kraken Pro than on Instant Buy.
- Fees fall as your volume or holdings grow.
- Many coins and trading pairs.
What to watch for
- Trustpilot showed 3.2 out of 5 from 9,382 reviews as of October 29, 2026.
- Regulators fined Kraken: $30 million to settle SEC charges over its US staking program (February 2023) and about $362,000 to settle OFAC sanctions violations (November 2022).
- Instant Buy costs far more than Kraken Pro.
The fine print
- Instant Buy purchases do not count toward Kraken Pro fee tiers.
- Fees depend on your 30-day volume or assets on platform.
- Features and staking options vary by country and US state.
The main alternative: Paybis Reviewed by Vetteroo
What it costs: 1.49% service fee (first purchase of each coin 0%), plus card and network fees, checked October 29, 2026
Pick Kraken Reviewed by Vetteroo if you…
- trade often and can use Kraken Pro.
- want many coins in one account.
- hold assets on the exchange.
Pick Paybis Reviewed by Vetteroo if you…
- make occasional card purchases.
- want crypto sent straight to your wallet.
Our take
Kraken is a long-running exchange whose Pro fees are competitive once you trade enough. Instant Buy is costly, its outside rating is mixed, and it has settled with US regulators. For simple occasional purchases into your own wallet, compare Paybis.
