We researched Proton's official pricing, plan terms, product pages, help documentation and Trustpilot profile. We haven't used Proton ourselves, so this is a research-based review, not a hands-on test.

Who it’s best for

  • People who want files encrypted so the provider cannot read them.
  • Users already on Proton Mail or Proton VPN.
  • Anyone moving away from Google Drive for privacy.

Who should skip it

  • Probably not the best fit if you want a lifetime plan or the cheapest storage per terabyte.

How it works day to day

This part draws on Proton’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 29, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Proton ourselves.

Day to day, you sync folders from your computer or phone, back up photos, and share files with links that can expire.

Key features in use

  • End-to-end encrypted storage.
  • Photo backup on mobile.
  • Encrypted docs and sheets.
  • Shared links with passwords and expiry.
  • Version history.

Setup and learning curve

Create a free account and install the desktop or mobile app.

Integrations

Works inside the Proton apps; fewer outside integrations.

Support

Help center and support tickets; priority support on paid plans.

Real-world use cases

  • A journalist stores sensitive documents.
  • A family backs up phone photos privately.
  • A small business shares contracts by secure link.

What it costs

Prices checked October 29, 2026, from Proton’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.

  • Free: 5 GB, no card needed.
  • Drive Plus: 200 GB for $4.99 a month, or $3.99 a month billed yearly.
  • Proton Unlimited: 500 GB plus Mail, VPN, Pass and Calendar for $12.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed yearly.
  • A 2 TB plan with VPN is also sold.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Our checker in Canada saw Canadian-dollar prices; the US prices come from Proton's US pricing pages.

What we like

  • End-to-end encryption; Proton says it cannot access your files.
  • Based in Switzerland.
  • Free 5 GB plan.
  • Bundles with Mail, VPN and Pass in Proton Unlimited.

What to watch for

  • Trustpilot showed 2.1 out of 5 from 1,806 reviews as of October 29, 2026 (Proton's main profile, mostly about Mail).
  • In 2021, under a binding Swiss order, Proton logged and gave Swiss authorities the IP address of a Proton Mail account; it says it did not hand over email content.
  • Fewer third-party app integrations than mainstream clouds.

The fine print

  • Lower monthly prices require yearly billing.
  • The money-back guarantee lasts 30 days.
  • Storage is shared across Proton apps on bundle plans.

The main alternative: pCloud Reviewed by Vetteroo

pCloud is another Swiss cloud with yearly and lifetime plans; its client-side encryption is a paid add-on.

What it costs: Lifetime 500 GB $219 one-time (promo as of October 29, 2026; regular $279)

Pick Proton Reviewed by Vetteroo if you…

  • put privacy first.
  • use other Proton apps.
  • want a free encrypted tier.

  • want media streaming from the cloud.

Our take

Proton Drive is a strong choice for encrypted cloud storage, especially if you use other Proton apps. Its outside rating is low and it lacks the integrations of bigger clouds; it also had a 2021 court-order case. pCloud is the main alternative.
