We researched Surfer's official pricing and terms, plus independent reviews and customer feedback. We haven't used Surfer ourselves, so this is a research-based review, not a hands-on test.

Who it’s best for

  • Writers and content teams who want guidance on what to include so a page can rank in Google and AI search.

Who should skip it

  • Probably not the best fit if you need a full SEO suite with backlink data.

How it works day to day

This part draws on Surfer’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Surfer ourselves.

You start a document in Surfer's Content Editor for the keyword you want to rank for. Surfer analyzes the pages that already rank for it and gives you guidelines: terms to use, a suggested structure and topics to cover. As you write, a Content Score from 0 to 100 updates live, so you can see how thoroughly the article covers the topic. Many writers do this inside Google Docs or WordPress using Surfer's side panel, then publish as usual.

Key features in use

  • Content Editor with live guidelines and a 0-100 Content Score.
  • A side panel for Google Docs (through Surfer's Chrome extension) and WordPress, with direct export to WordPress.
  • Topical Map, which finds content gaps and topic clusters, using your Google Search Console data where connected.
  • AI visibility tracking that monitors how often your brand and pages are mentioned or cited in AI answers (Standard and up).

Setup and learning curve

Creating a first Content Editor document takes minutes. Learning how much to follow the guidelines takes longer; as noted under What to watch for, chasing the score too closely can make writing sound formulaic, so most teams treat it as a checklist rather than a target.

Integrations

Surfer works inside Google Docs and WordPress, connects to Google Search Console for Topical Map, and offers API access on its top plan.

Support

Surfer offers chat and email support and a documentation site that explains each tool.

Real-world use cases

  • A blogger checks an article against what top-ranking pages cover before publishing.
  • A content team plans a cluster of articles from a Topical Map.
  • A brand tracks whether it's being cited in AI search answers.

What it costs

Prices checked October 25, 2026, from Surfer’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.

  • Discovery: $49 a month billed yearly (about $59 monthly). 120 documents.
  • Standard: $99 a month billed yearly (about $119 monthly). 360 documents, AI visibility tracking for 25 prompts, plagiarism checker.
  • Pro: $182 a month billed yearly (about $219 monthly). Internal linking and content-gap tools.
  • Peace of Mind: $299 a month billed yearly (about $359 monthly). "Unlimited" documents under a fair-use cap and API access.
  • Monthly figures are worked out from the yearly savings Surfer lists. Surfer's older Essential and Scale plans have been retired.

What we like

  • A well-known content editor for on-page optimization.
  • Adds tracking of how often you appear in AI search answers.

What to watch for

  • Pricey compared with Frase's entry plan.
  • It's an optimization tool, not a full SEO suite.
  • Following its scores too closely can make writing sound formulaic.
  • Reviews mention billing and credit issues.

The fine print

  • The 7-day Pro trial needs billing details and converts to paid unless you cancel before day 7.
  • Yearly plans are prepaid and generally non-refundable, per an independent review.
  • "Unlimited" is capped at 500 documents a month under Surfer's fair-use policy.

The main alternative: Frase

Frase generally doesn't give refunds; cancelling stops the next renewal.

What it costs: $39/mo yearly ($49 monthly)

Pick Surfer if you…

  • write a lot of content and want a widely used optimization editor.
  • care about tracking visibility in AI search.

Pick Frase if you…

  • want content briefs and optimization at a lower entry price.
  • publish fewer articles a month.

Our take

Surfer is a solid content optimization tool for teams that publish regularly, but it's not cheap and refunds are limited. Cancel the trial in time if you're unsure. Frase is a lower-cost alternative.
