- Freelancer business software
- Best for
- Freelancers and small agencies

We researched Bonsai's official pricing and terms, plus independent reviews and customer feedback. We haven't used Bonsai ourselves, so this is a research-based review, not a hands-on test.
Who it’s best for
- Freelancers and small agencies who want proposals, contracts, invoices and time tracking in one app.
- People outside the US and Canada (HoneyBook is US and Canada only).
Who should skip it
- Probably not the best fit for teams of more than a few people, because pricing is per user.
How it works day to day
This part draws on Bonsai’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Bonsai ourselves.
Bonsai follows a client from first contact to final payment: a lead goes into its CRM, you send a proposal, turn the accepted proposal into a contract the client signs online, track time and tasks on the project, then bill from your tracked hours. Clients see their documents, invoices and messages in a branded client portal, and Bonsai says they don't need to create an account to use it.
Key features in use
- Proposals and contracts with templates and online signing.
- Time tracking with a live timer, manual entries and timesheets, split into billable and non-billable hours, which can be turned into an invoice.
- Invoices that clients can pay online through Bonsai Payments, Stripe or PayPal.
- A branded client portal for projects, files, invoices and messages.
- Projects and tasks for organizing the work itself.
Setup and learning curve
A solo freelancer can be sending proposals and invoices quickly by starting from Bonsai's templates; the main setup work is adding your branding, payment method and service details. Teams take longer because each person needs a seat and permissions.
Integrations
Bonsai's help center lists integrations with QuickBooks, Xero, Zapier, Calendly and Google. Through Zapier, events such as a signed contract or a paid invoice can trigger actions in other apps.
Support
Bonsai keeps a help center organized by area (finance, integrations and so on).
Real-world use cases
- A freelance designer outside the US sends proposals, contracts and invoices from one app.
- A consultant bills clients from tracked hours instead of building invoices by hand.
- A small agency gives each client one portal for files, invoices and messages.
What it costs
Prices checked October 25, 2026, from Bonsai’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.

- Works for freelancers in many countries.
What to watch for
- The cheapest plan doesn't include invoicing, so Essentials is the real starting point.
- Per-user pricing adds up for teams.
- Card payments through Bonsai carry fees, plus currency conversion for foreign clients, per reviews.
- No free plan; a 7-day trial.
The fine print
- Some reviewers mention a separate tax add-on and payment holds.

Pick HoneyBook if you…
- run a creative service business in the US or Canada and want polished client experiences.
- want a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Our take
Bonsai is a good all-in-one for freelancers, as long as you budget for the Essentials plan, which is where invoicing starts. Check payment fees before you invoice through it. US and Canadian creative businesses should also look at HoneyBook.
