We researched NordVPN's official pricing, plan terms, product pages and help documentation. This review is mainly research-based, plus the long-term personal use of a member of our team who has used NordVPN for years. It isn't a formal lab test.

Who it’s best for

  • People who want a fast, well-known VPN with security extras in the same app.
  • Households with up to 10 devices to cover on one account.
  • Travelers and remote workers who connect on public Wi-Fi often.

Who should skip it

  • Not the cheapest choice if you need more than 10 devices at once, since Surfshark covers unlimited devices.

How it works day to day

This part draws on NordVPN’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used NordVPN ourselves.

Day to day, NordVPN is an app you open and connect with one click. You can pick a country from the server list or use specialty options such as Double VPN. Threat Protection runs in the background and filters malicious domains, ads and trackers while the app is on. A member of our team has used NordVPN for years, including while traveling in Europe and South America, and has found it easy to use with no problems.

Key features in use

  • Kill switch: cuts your internet if the VPN drops, so traffic isn't exposed.
  • Split tunneling: choose apps that skip the VPN, such as a banking app that blocks VPN traffic.
  • Meshnet: link your own devices (or a friend's) over encrypted tunnels, for file sharing or remote access.
  • Double VPN: routes traffic through two servers for an extra layer of privacy.
  • Dark Web Monitor: alerts if your email address shows up in a leak (up to 5 emails on Basic).

Setup and learning curve

Setup is install, sign in and connect. NordVPN says no manual setup is needed. Advanced features such as Meshnet and split tunneling live in the settings and take a few minutes to learn. Routers need their own setup.

Integrations

NordVPN has apps for the major desktop and mobile platforms and can also run on routers. The Complete plan bundles NordPass (password manager) and NordLocker cloud storage under the same Nord Account.

Support

NordVPN offers 24/7 customer support, which is also where you request a refund within the 30-day window.

Real-world use cases

  • A remote worker connects before using coffee-shop Wi-Fi.
  • A family covers phones, laptops and a TV on one account (up to 10 at once).
  • Someone links a home computer and a laptop with Meshnet to reach files while away.

What it costs

Prices checked October 26, 2026, from NordVPN’s own pricing page unless noted. Prices change often, so check the official page before you buy.

  • Basic: $3.49 a month on the 2-year plan, which includes 3 extra months: $94.23 for the first 27 months. Renews at $139.08 a year.
  • Complete (adds antivirus, ad blocking, a password manager and 1 TB of cloud storage): $3.99 a month, $107.73 for the first 27 months. Renews at $219.48 a year.
  • Prime (adds credit monitoring and identity-theft insurance in the U.S.): $6.99 a month, $188.73 for the first 27 months. Renews at $296.28 a year.
  • 1-year plans: $4.99, $5.99 and $8.99 a month ($74.85, $89.85 and $134.85 for the first 15 months). Month-to-month: $14.99, $19.99 and $29.99.
  • The page labels the current offer a Black Friday deal. All plans: 30-day money-back guarantee; sales tax may apply.

What we like

  • One account covers 10 devices at once.
  • Threat Protection, scam and phishing filtering, and Dark Web Monitor for email addresses are included even on Basic.
  • Extra tools for specific jobs: Meshnet, Double VPN, split tunneling and an optional dedicated IP.
  • Servers in 225+ locations, according to NordVPN.
  • 30-day money-back guarantee on every plan.

What to watch for

  • The low prices are intro prices; renewals cost much more (Basic renews at $139.08 a year).
  • You pay the whole 27-month term up front to get the lowest monthly figure.
  • Several Complete features (ad and tracker blocker, email protection, antivirus scanning) are desktop only.
  • Identity and credit protection on Prime is for U.S. residents only, and insurance excludes New York.

The fine print

  • Plans renew automatically at the then-current renewal price unless you cancel.
  • Refunds must be requested within 30 days of the first purchase; app-store purchases are refunded through the store.
  • A dedicated IP and Incogni data removal are paid add-ons at checkout.

The main alternative: Surfshark

Surfshark is the closest alternative on price and features. Its biggest difference is unlimited simultaneous connections, so one plan covers every device in a big household. It also includes CleanWeb ad blocking, a kill switch, split tunneling (Bypasser) and Dynamic MultiHop.

What it costs: $2.49/mo on a 2-year plan ($67.23 for 27 months), checked October 26, 2026

Pick NordVPN if you…

  • want strong extras (threat protection, dark web alerts) bundled with the VPN.
  • have up to 10 devices and want a well-known, widely used app.
  • are happy to prepay two years to get the low price.

Pick Surfshark if you…

  • have more than 10 devices to protect.
  • want the lowest cost per device.

Our take

NordVPN is a strong all-round pick: fast, widely used, with useful security extras even on Basic and a 30-day refund window. Budget for the renewal price, not just the intro deal. If you need more than 10 devices, look at Surfshark.
