Who it’s best for
- Privacy-minded people who want email aliases built in.
- People who want a genuinely useful free password manager.
Who should skip it
- Probably not the best fit if you want the longest-established app.
How it works day to day
This part draws on Proton Pass’s own product pages, help center and documentation, read October 26, 2026 (listed under Sources). We haven’t used Proton Pass ourselves.
Proton Pass works like other password managers: its browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Brave and Edge) and mobile apps save logins as you sign in, fill them in next time, and generate strong passwords for new accounts. What sets it apart is hide-my-email aliases: when a site asks for an email address, Proton Pass can create a unique forwarding address on the spot, so your real inbox stays private.
Key features in use
- Autofill and a password generator in the browser and on mobile.
- Hide-my-email aliases (10 on Free, unlimited on Plus, with custom domains on Plus).
- Passkey storage and built-in two-factor codes (noted above).
- Pass Monitor: password-health and missing-2FA checks on Free; dark-web monitoring on Plus.
Setup and learning curve
Install the extension or app, sign in with a Proton account, and import your existing passwords. Proton supports imports from 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, KeePass, LastPass, NordPass, RoboForm and browser password stores, usually by exporting a CSV from the old manager.
Integrations
Proton Pass is part of Proton's wider privacy suite (Mail, VPN, Drive and more), and its aliases forward to whatever inbox you choose.
Support
Proton keeps a support site with setup and import guides for Proton Pass.
Real-world use cases
- Someone switching from a browser's built-in password saving to a free, more private manager.
- A person who signs up for many newsletters and shops and wants a unique alias for each.
- A family that wants a shared vault on the Family plan.

What we like
- PCMag rated it 4.5 out of 5 ("Outstanding") as of October 25, 2026, and called it the best free password manager.
- Unlimited email aliases on Pass Plus.

The main alternative: 1Password

Pick 1Password if you…
- want the most polished app and are happy to pay.

Our take
Proton Pass is the best free password manager we found, and Pass Plus is good value. 1Password is more polished but has no free plan.
