Video editing software compared

Desktop, phone and online video editors and screen recorders we've reviewed, compared on free plans, price and refunds.

This page is for anyone editing video without a professional studio: creators making short social clips, small businesses making promo videos, teams recording screen tutorials, and hobbyists cutting family or travel footage. It covers phone and browser editors, desktop apps, template video makers and screen recorders. If you only trim the odd clip, the editor built into your phone may be enough.

Think about where you edit and what you make. Browser editors are easy to share with a team; desktop apps handle longer, heavier projects; template tools make quick promos with little skill. Check whether free plans add a watermark, export quality limits, AI features like auto captions, and whether you can buy a one-time license instead of a subscription. Refund windows vary from 7 to 30 days, and some sellers don't refund at all.

Prices we saw ran from free plans to about $9 to $20 a month for most subscriptions, with one-time desktop licenses from about $50 to $90.

Best for

  • Best free editor for social videos: CapCut. A free plan with core tools; Pro $19.99 a month.
  • Best desktop editor for beginners: Filmora (Wondershare). Basic $49.99 a year, a $79.99 one-time license, and a 30-day money-back.
  • Best browser editor for teams: VEED. A free plan, and Creator $12 a user a month billed annually.
