1Password vs LastPass
Who should pick which, from each company’s own pricing pages and terms.
We check it out so you don’t have to.
How we researched this page: we read each company’s own pricing pages and terms, independent tests, and customer reviews. We did not use these products ourselves. Prices change often, so each one shows the date we checked it.
Two familiar names at similar prices. The big difference is history: LastPass’s 2022 breach still affects people who stored vaults with it then.
| Item | 1Password | LastPass |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | A well-known app with a listed regular price | Existing users and people who want a familiar app |
| Personal price | $2.99/mo billed yearly in year one, then $3.99, checked October 25, 2026 | About $3/mo billed yearly (Premium); dollar figure from a secondary source |
| Free plan | No (14-day trial) | Yes (one device type only) |
| Security history | No vault breach of the kind LastPass had | 2022 breach: encrypted vault backups stolen |
Pick 1Password if you…
- want a polished app and a clearly listed price after year one.
- want a fresh start away from a provider that lost customer vaults in 2022.
Pick LastPass if you…
- already use it, have changed your master password and older passwords since 2022, and want to stay with a familiar app.
- want a free plan for one device type.
Quick verdict
Most new users are better served by 1Password or another option on our password managers page. LastPass has strengthened its encryption and added certifications since 2022, but anyone who kept crypto keys or other high-value secrets in LastPass before then should move those funds and change those passwords.
