Best Password Managers
Every company here was researched from its own pricing pages and terms. No paid rankings.
We check it out so you don’t have to.
How we researched this page: we read each company’s own pricing pages and terms, independent tests, and customer reviews. We did not use these products ourselves. Prices change often, so each one shows the date we checked it.
The short version
For most people, a paid plan from 1Password, NordPass, Proton Pass or Dashlane is a solid choice. For the lowest price with an open-source app, Bitwarden is excellent. LastPass is still sold. Read its section before choosing it.

LastPass: what happened, and what’s changed
The breach, plainly. In 2022, attackers broke into LastPass and stole backups of customer password vaults. The passwords inside were encrypted with each customer’s master password, but some data, such as website addresses, was not. Anyone with a weak master password, or an older account set to fewer encryption rounds, is at real risk, because attackers can try to crack stolen vaults offline for as long as they like. Since then, security researchers at TRM Labs have tied more than $35 million in cryptocurrency thefts in 2024–25 to vaults cracked from that breach. In November 2025 the UK’s data regulator (the ICO) fined LastPass UK about £1.2 million for not keeping data secure.
What has changed since. LastPass raised its default encryption strength (600,000 PBKDF2 rounds) and pushed older accounts up to it. It says it has rebuilt its infrastructure, rotated secrets, and added security teams. It now lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, SOC 2 Type II and BSI C5 certifications.
What it costs: Premium is about $3/mo billed yearly ($36/yr), and Families is $1 more a month for 6 people. The plan comparison is from LastPass’s own page; the dollar figure is from a secondary source, because LastPass’s page only showed us Canadian dollars. The free plan works on one device type only. 30-day trial.
Who it still fits: existing users who have changed their master password and the passwords they stored before 2022, and people who want a familiar app on a budget.
Who should pick something else: anyone who stored crypto wallet keys or other high-value secrets in LastPass before 2022 should move those funds and change those passwords, whichever manager they use next.
What we won’t say: we don’t call LastPass “the most secure,” and we don’t suggest the breach doesn’t matter.
